1. What is a kennel club?

A kennel club is an organisation that registers dogs, maintains breed standards and promotes responsible dog ownership, breeding and canine activities such as shows, trials, and education.

2. What does the Bermuda Kennel Club do?

The Bermuda Kennel Club (“BKC”) is the Governing Body and Official Registry of purebred dogs in Bermuda. We play a central role in supporting and promoting responsible dog ownership across the island.

Dog Registration

1. Why should I register my dog?

Registration provides official identification and records your dog’s pedigree, ownership and breed details. It also allows participation in recognised events.

2. What is a pedigree?

A pedigree is a record of a dog’s ancestry, often covering several generations.

3. Why is pedigree important?

A dog’s pedigree is more than just a family tree; it’s an important record that helps owners, breeders and kennel clubs make informed decisions about a dog’s health, behaviour, and suitability for different roles.

Pedigrees help ensure that dogs conform to recognised breed standards, including appearance, temperament and working abilities. This is especially important for maintaining the unique traits of each breed over time.

4. How do I register my dog?

If your dog was born outside of Bermuda, you will need to fill out the ‘Application for Registration of an Individual Dog Born Outside of Bermuda’ form which is located on the forms page on our website.  

Note you will require the following accompanying documents in order to complete your application:

If your dog was born in Bermuda, in order to be eligible, your breeder must have registered their litter of puppies with us and completed the required forms. Please contact your breeder.

If you are a breeder, please go to our forms page and complete the required forms. You will find a comprehensive listing of registration requirements on the second page of the ‘Application for Registration of Litter’ form.

5. Can mixed-breed dogs be registered?

Yes, we accept registration of mixed-breed dogs for participation in BKC-governed show competitions (e.g. agility, obedience). Please go to our Forms page on the website and fill out the ‘Application Form for Mixed Breed Register'.

6. Can spayed/neutered dogs be registered?

Yes, spayed or neutered dogs can be registered for participation in certain BKC-governed show competitions, e.g agility, obedience.

7. What if I lose my dog’s registration papers?

If your dog was previously registered through the BKC, please email the president at: president@bermudakennelclub.com

Please note that proof of ownership and a fee may apply.

Membership

1. How do I become a member?

To become a member, simply fill out the membership form which is located on the Forms page of the BKC website and pay the initiation and annual fee. A Schedule of Fees can be found on the home page.

2. Do I need to be a member to register a dog?

No, you do not have to be a member to register your dog, however, members receive reduced fees.

2. Can any dog enter competitions?

Yes, any BKC registered dog may participate in the obedience, agility, rally and canine good citizen competitions.

3. What is Obedience?

Obedience trails focus on how well dogs can follow certain commands outlined by the judge such as sit, stay, heel and recall. Dogs are judged on accuracy, control and responsiveness to commands.

4. What is Aglilty?

Agility involves navigating an obstacle course that may include jumps, tunnels and weave poles. Dogs are judged on speed, accuracy and how well they complete the course.

5. What is Rally?

Rally is a dog sport where handlers guide their dogs through a course of signs, performing obedience exercises at each station. It emphasises teamwork, communication and enjoyment, and is suitable for dogs and handlers of all experience levels.

6. What is Canine Good Citizen?

This is a test put on by the Dog Training Club of Bermuda, under the BKC governing body which is designed to recognise dogs that demonstrate good manners, basic obedience and responsible behaviour in everyday situations.
